  • Review an annotated bibliography listing new children’s books that contain economic and personal finance content.
  • Consider the National Economics Content Standards: Standard 1: Scarcity, Standard 2: Decision Making, Standard 3: Allocation, Standard 4: Incentives, Standard 7: Markets and Prices, Standard 14: Entrepreneurship.

Description

Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Giver, The Hunger Games, and A Wrinkle in Time are all popular books that have been turned into movies. This session, designed for classroom teachers and resource specialists, features titles that can be used to teach in the content areas, enrich learning, and promote creative problem solving. Using the provided lessons and activities, students will learn about choices, money, entrepreneurship, market systems, and scarcity. The themes of intolerance, abuse of power, totalitarian government, and pollution will be covered. Included are classroom-ready lessons, online teacher resources and an annotated bibliography. It is to be noted that the students do not need to have read the books or seen the movies to successfully complete the lessons.
